Candy Canes and Cookies: Holiday Treats in the Classroom

Hi, this is Brandi from The Research Based Classroom. Welcome back to our second day of Unwrapping Holiday Classroom Ideas. Today's posts are sure to be full of yummy treats because everyone is blogging about:

One of the things I love to do each year is make candy trains with my class. It doesn't matter if you teach little ones or bigs ones, everyone loves to make candy trains.

For each train you will need:
  • 2 1/2 Three Musketeer bars
  • 6 cherry Lifesavers
  • 4 smarties
  • 12 M-n-M's or Skittles
  • 1 Hershey Kiss
  • 14 peppermint candies
  • 6 tootsie rolls
  • 1 orange gumdrop
  • one toothpick to hold the Lifesavers up
  • old-fashioned licorice lace or Twizzlers pull and peel (black or red)
  • 6 x 15-18 inch cardboard wrapped in aluminum foil (tape the foil on the bottom) or for a tighter fit you can use an oval shaped dinner plate
  • white frosting - about 1/4 cup per student (I make royal icing because it hardens. Put a scoop in a freezer quart size bag. Try to place it in the corner. Twist and rubber band it closed. Then just cut the corner off and your students can squeeze. This works great with freezer bags, but trust me, don't use sandwich bags. The year I used sandwich bags, about half my students popped their bags. I have also seen it done with squeezable frosting from the baking aisle of the grocery store. It doesn't harden as well, but it's easier!)

  1. I have made the mistake of using sandwich bags before. What a mess. The train is adorable! My son loves trains and sweet treats. I see candy trains in our future.

    1. Oh yes. Sandwich bags were a big mistake. But freezer quart size work perfect. You just need that thicker plastic.
